Meet the musicians

Todd Wilkinson

Dr. Todd Wilkinson was the Instructor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Studies here at Washburn University from 1999-2005. This is his first season as Musical Director for the Sunflower Jazz All-Stars. Born and raised in Kansas City, Todd holds degrees in jazz performance at Arizona State University (BM), music theory/composition at Stephen F. Austin State University (MA), jazz and saxophone pedagogy at the University of Northern Colorado (DA), and saxophone performance at the University of Kansas (DMA).

Professor Wilkinson has also held full-time college teaching positions South Australia College of Advanced Education, the University of Kansas, and Ottawa University where he retired as a tenured full professor. A past president of the Kansas City Jazz Ambassadors, author of The Kansas City Jazz and Blues Nightlife Survival Kit, artistic director for the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival in Topeka, and former owner of the Drum Room Jazz Club in Westport, Todd has performed with Everette DeVan, the K.C. Bottoms Band, and his own groups, Bokomaru (their critically acclaimed CD Dreamland on FunPro Records), and the Goombahles, (producing two CDs for the ARC Label On the Lam, and On Ice). Todd has also composed and performed several works for his Conical Boar Saxophone Quintet (releasing a CD Tusk also on ARC). Since retiring from academia, he has organized the Kansas City Saxophone Quartet, and can be heard performing with Lost Wax, Tim Whitmer, Paganova, Vine Street Rumble, and Tom’s Town.
