Benjamin Coelho, bassoonist, is a dynamic and expressive performer, educator, and recording artist whose career spans five continents. Originally from Brazil, he is currently Professor of Bassoon at the University of Iowa, where he has taught since 1998. He also serves as the principal bassoonist of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra.
Benjamin began his studies at the Tatuí Conservatory in Brazil and continued his education in the United States, earning a BFA from Purchase College and a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, with additional graduate work at Indiana University.
A passionate advocate for expanding the bassoon repertoire, Ben has commissioned, premiered, and recorded numerous works by Latin American, American, and European composers. His seven critically acclaimed solo CDs have received praise in national and international publications.Benjamin finds great joy and fulfillment as a teacher and pedagogue. His students have successfully gained positions at public schools, universities, colleges, orchestras, and the music industry. He has also given masterclasses across the globe and served on faculty at festivals in Brazil, Argentina, Czechia, France, Guatemala, India, Tajikistan, the USA, and beyond.
In addition to his artistic and pedagogical work, Benjamin is deeply committed to service. At the University of Iowa, he has taken on several leadership roles, including serving as Interim Director of the School of Music, five associate director positions, and currently as Director of Graduate Studies. His work has been recognized with the Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service, and he was also awarded a Collegiate Fellow by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He has served as both Vice President and Secretary of the International Double Reed Society.
Benjamin lives in Iowa City, Iowa, with his beloved wife, Karen, and is a proud father of his daughters, Liliana and Julia.
