Meet the musicians

Brent Mead

Brent is an avid performer and teacher based in Kansas City, MO. In 2018, Brent began performing with the Wichita Symphony as their principal trombonist. He has also performed with the Fountain City Brass Band, Orchestra Iowa, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony and is on the substitute list with other orchestras across the Midwest. Brent appeared as a guest soloist with the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band in July 2017, in addition to performing with the Mason City Municipal Band from 2009 to 2013, the Waterloo Municipal Band in 2015, and professional jazz bands across Iowa. As a Master’s student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, Brent was a member of the graduate fellowship brass quintet Volker Brass. During those two years, Volker Brass was a semi-finalist and Senior Division American Brass Quintet Prize award winner at the 2019 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, they placed 3rd in the Music Teacher’s National Association (MTNA) Chamber Music Wind competition in 2018, were a 2019 MTNA Chamber Music Wind national finalist, and alternates in Fischoff, Coltman, and Plowman national chamber music competitions.

Brent is also passionate about education and enjoys volunteering his time at schools sharing his love of music. He has worked with students at universities, youth symphonies, and the Kansas City Trombone Workshop in addition to teaching private lessons since 2013. Brent also works with the Olathe School District as a substitute teacher, frequently filling in for band directors across the district.

In his free time, Brent enjoys cooking, learning, and watching movies with his wife, Hannah, and their dog, Jemma.
