Meet the musicians

Abril Nunez

Abril Nunez began playing the violin at the age of seven, developing a deep passion for both orchestral and chamber music. She participated in several seminars organized by the Latin American Academy for String Quartets, led by the Latin American Quartet, as well as in a program jointly organized by the New England Conservatory and FESNOJIV, where she received masterclasses from the Borromeo String Quartet.

Her early artistic formation was shaped within El Sistema, Venezuela’s internationally acclaimed music education program dedicated to social transformation through music. Through El Sistema, she performed with children’s, youth, and professional orchestras, fostering not only musical growth but also a heightened sense of artistic collaboration, adaptability, and a profound belief in music’s ability to bridge cultures and create meaningful connections. Later, Abril earned a position with the Orquesta Municipal de Caracas, with which she undertook an extensive international tour, performing in Japan, France, Italy, Singapore, Denmark, and other countries.

In the United States, she has held positions with the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared at festivals including the San Diego International Youth Orchestra Festival, Ohio Light Opera, Buzzards Bay Musicfest, and the Sunflower Music Festival, where she is delighted to be returning this season.

Abril completed her Master’s degree in Violin Performance at Duquesne University, where she studied primarily with Charles Stegeman, as well as Rachel Stegeman. She has also performed with the Wheeling Symphony, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Opera.
